What Hiring Managers Can Learn From the NY Jets

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL? J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets! Woo, it’s going to be insane. Who would have thought the little NY team that could would have made it all the way to the playoffs?

And maybe they’ll make it to the Super Bowl. That would mean…Oooh, maybe football isn't so bad...that I’ll be watching commercials and the halftime show, same as always. (Yay Baba O’Riley!)

I don’t know much about sports. (I know, shocking, right?) But from what my Jets-super-fan boyfriend told me, it’s a big deal that the Jets have even made it this far.

Oooh, maybe football isn’t so bad…

The NY Jets have a new coach, Rex Ryan. The quarterback is a rookie, Mark Sanchez (who is very easy on the eyes, might I add). No one expected the team to win anything. Now they have a shot at the Super Bowl.

Hmmm. New employees, who might not have the most experience, could lead their peers to success? Might be something to think about when you’re hiring your next employee.

Because of the economic recession, many people are looking for new jobs. Some of these job candidates are seasoned professionals.

And I’m sure a lot of these professionals who have been in the work world for a long time would do a fabulous job–they bring professionalism, position know-how, and the confidence that comes from being in a career for awhile.

On the other hand, they also may be stuck in a certain mindset. You know the one: “Oh, in my old company, we did it this way…” or “This is the only way to solve this problem…” or “Coffee shouldonly be made with two sugars and skim milk, thank you very much…”

Maybe it’s time to shake things up. Just because there are more job applicants with previous experience doesn’t mean you should discount those who are just out of college or switching careers.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you should offer the job to the first cute co-ed who walks through your door brandishing a resume. (At least wait for the second or third one.) Just keep an open mind. People who might not have experience in that particular position might have fresh ideas, or have other qualifications or personality traits that his or her predecessor didn’t have that could be an asset to the company.

Who knows, the new person might just bring home a big win for your company!
